Match Report

Reading
A Le Fondre (9) OG (14)
Middlesbrough
No goals
Reading took full advantage of a remarkable set of Championship results yesterday to climb back into sixth place again. A win tonight was essential for the Royals to remain in contention for a play-off place. It was clear from the outset that the players were determined not to allow their chance to slip away. Reading fielded their strongest side for some time, and raced into a two goal lead in the opening fourteen minutes. Although Reading lost some their early momentum through injuries to Robson-Kanu and Guthrie they successfully re-adjusted to the enforced changes, finished strongly in the second half, and deserved to win by an even greater margin.

Robson-Kanu and LeFondre were looking very sharp up front and were well served by Danny Guthrie with some sharp and incisive passing, and Danny Williams running through the Boro’ midfield. McAnuff and McCleary were going past defenders in wide positions and the visitors were clearly rattled. A long ball played in to the corner by McAnuff held up sufficiently to allow Obita to deliver a superb cross to the far post. McCleary put the ball back into the goal mouth where Le Fondre poached his fourteenth goal of the season. The turning point in the game came in the thirteenth minute when Reading’s lack of pace at the back was exposed by a straightforward ball through the middle which presented Graham with a golden opportunity to equalise. Fortunately for the Royals he blasted it wide. A minute later Reading were two up when a delightfully flighted free kick from Obita was deflected past Konstantopoulos. Shortly after wards Robson-Kanu sustained a very nasty facial injury and left the field after a lengthy spell of treatment. He was replaced by Pogrebnyak, who after a sluggish start, had an outstanding second half.

Middlesbrough certainly posed a threat with their slick passing but Reading confined them to long range efforts throughout. Danny Guthrie was clearly carrying and injury and although he came out for the second half he only lasted a couple of minutes before he too had to be replaced. Akpan was a more than adequate replacement and helped Reading through an early spell of Middlesbrough dominance in the second half. Reading demonstrated why attack is often the best form of defence by pressing forward at every opportunity keeping their opponents on the back foot. A brilliant run by Pogrebnyak took him through the Boro’ back four and but for a fingertip save by Konstantopoulos, it would have made the made victory certain. The referee, who missed several blatant pushes on Reading players as they prepared to attack the ball in the air, also missed the save and infuriatingly awarded a goal kick.

Pogrebnyak was winning the ball in the air and generally running the Boro’ defence ragged, had a looping header which landed on the roof of the net. Le Fondre came even closer to scoring a third with a header from McCleary’s cross which beat the ‘keeper but came back off the cross bar. The home fans sensed victory and roared their team on to a fine win. Gunter almost gifted a consolation goal to Boro’ with a ridiculous back pass. McCarthy maintained his concentration to the end and was out smartly to snuff out what was a good chance.

A win at Doncaster on Saturday (which should not be taken for granted) would set up a exciting finale to the season at home to Burnley. Tonight’s performance was extremely encouraging. Everyone played well. The injuries to Guthrie and Robson-Kanu are cause for concern but Reading’s season is still very much alive.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Well - they certainly tried hard tonight! No lack of effort and no lack of passion. Also - I have never seen NA so animated in his technical area. He was yelling at players almost constantly, applauding their efforts when warranted and he even squared up to the fourth official when a Reading corner was given as a goal kick!! I have never seen him so angry/passionate!

Both goals were 'scrappy' but we well deserved the victory. When we play at a high tempo, as we did in the first half particularly, we look good. Boro must have been told to take the wind out of sails in the second half because they played possession football for the first 10 minutes or so, knocking the ball around between themselves (mainly at the back) and we struggled to get hold of the ball at all. That was when the crowd went quiet but overall I thought there was great noise and encouragement for the team.

MOTM for me was between Obita, Jobi and McCleary all of whom worked their socks off. I like Williams very much but he is too easily knocked off the ball, particularly today. McCarthy did well and I thought his distribution was better today. There was less tippy-tappy stuff between him and the back four than usual although we did put ourselves under pressure that way a few times. Less said about Gunter's back pass in time added on the better but that and a terrible wayward shot were the worst incidents in, I thought, a below par game for him. I think central defence is where we are weak. Morrison is not back to his best yet and Pearce may be dominant in the air but he rarely directs his headers to one of his own team mates! He also gives away too many free kicks.

I didn't think Guthrie was at his best either but, from what Adkins said afterwards, he probably wasn't match fit yet. He didn't look too bad when he limped off and I hope he's fit for Donny although Akpan did OK in his place. Hal was streaming blood when he came off and there was a 5 minute delay while he was treated on the pitch. He had also been lively but Pog did well when he replaced him. Pog is frustrating because he seems to amble through the game unless he is directly involved and he was the target of a lot of NA shouting during the match. But he has good feet for such a big man and deserved to score when he dribbled past 4 defenders and just failed with a one-on-one with their goalie (who was kept busy and was probably their MOTM!). Alf had a good game, I thought, getting involved more than usual in holding the ball up, helping out in defence and putting in some decent crosses.

Overall a much improved performance and so so good to see the passion back. If we keep this up we could still make it into the play-offs although I cannot see anyone but Wigan securing that 3rd promotion spot.

Quotes from the Press

Reading manager Nigel Adkins:
"Our destiny is in our own hands. We were excellent: we had passion, we had hunger, we had walking wounded out there again and all credit to them. We started well, got two great goals and played some good football. You saw the togetherness of the team. Middlesbrough are a good side so it's an excellent result and it puts us in a play-off position with two tough games to come. We are still in the race and everyone knows when you get to the play-offs it's anyone's game."
