Match Report

J Swift (64) T Dele-Bashiru (67) T Dele-Bashiru (88)
Peterborough
N Thompson (74)
An exquisite free kick by John Swift after sixty-four minutes brought this dour struggle to life and sparked a furry of late goals to secure Reading's much needed second victory of the season. Having broken the deadlock, Puscas set up Dele-Bashiru for Reading's second three minute later as Peterborough fell apart. The visitors managed to recover their composure and pulled a goal back through Thompson with a far post header. Given the frequency with which the Royals have conceded late goals recently, the home fans could be forgiven for fearing another late collapse. Learning from recent disasters Reading managed the game well and went for a third goal which duly arrived in spectacular fashion from Dele-Bashiru two minutes from the end of normal time. Swift slipped him a pass outside the box and Peterborough gave him sufficient time and space to beat Pym with an outstanding dipping and swerving strike.

This was a fixture destined to produced goals given the defensive weakness shown so far this season by both teams. The first half however was lacking in quality and creativity. Southwood, stepping in to replace Raphael in goal following his controversial post-match injury on Saturday, was the busier of the two ‘keepers. Reading fans were no doubt relieved, and pleased, the see him pull off two excellent first half saves and play the ball out effectively and safely from his area.

Reading dominated the first half but struggled to make any impression on a Peterborough defence eager to make amends for leaking six goals on Saturday. Just before half time Reading's injury crisis deepened as Moore limped off. Thankfully Holmes proved a more than adequate replacement. Nevertheless Peterborough, encouraged by keeping Reading at arm's length began to show signs of a growing a belief they might even try to win the game.

Swift's spectacular strike gave Reading a lift midway through the second half and a sharp turn and accurate cut back for Dele-Bashiru to finish smartly, put Reading in the driving seat. Peterborough brought themselves back into contention taking advantage of poor defending from a free kick. Ejaria at the far post, failed to position himself sideways on for the incoming cross thus leaving Thompson out of his line of vision, then failed to get up to even challenge for the ball in the air leaving the Peterborough defender to head down into the net from close range.

With Holmes winning everything in the air at the back, and Morrison's tenacity and determination, Reading worked hard to avoid another late capitulation. Dele-Bashiri's late strike secured the points and was worthy of winning any game.

The three points lifted Reading away from the bottom of the league and although it may not be a turning point in the season, it was certainly a step in the right direction and a boost for confidence. Bizarrely Reading have only one experienced striker currently available, who has yet to score this season, and yet with fifteen goals only QPR have score more in the league! Everyone knows where improvement need to be made. Fortunately, although he is yet to find the net, Puscas is beginning to have a significant impact on the game and Swift is in the form of his career right now.

Cagey first half, whisper it but we actually had a tactic which was to attack their left full back who was the worst player on the pitch by some distance. We had them at arm's length when they attacked, what was notable was the talking and encouragement between Southwood and the defence, an obvious improvement. Kind of felt that if they nicked one we might struggle, especially when they came out with a much better tempo in the 2nd half, but they wilted after Swift's goal (a foul well won by Halilovic, the only thing I saw him do right all match). Cracking second goal from TDB after good play from Puskas (who was decent throughout…

    Hello Westwood52, how`s it going?

It'll sound odd after a win, when we had what felt like a loss against QPR but we were better against QPR. We were so-so tonight against and awful team who thoroughly deserve to go down. But we DID deserve to win. WELL DONE BOYS!!! Southwood - 7. Actually very solid with a couple of good saves, some refreshingly confident catches, good kicks, good command. Can't fault him except for his ridiculous comedy moment of falling when coming for the ball. It looked so comical the awful ref thought he must've been fouled and gave us a bizarre FK, Welcome Southwood. I feel sorry for Rafael but he may have real competition on his hands.…

An absolutely turgid first 60mins then a few moments of brilliance and we’ve come out on top. Let’s face it, Peterborough are going down - although I hope we can build on this - 2 games unbeaten :D Glad to see Southwood didn’t have a howler. Pulled off a good save in the first half. Not much else to do. At the closing stages I thought to myself our midfield might be something special this year with Halilovic, Dele-Bashiru, Ejaria, Rino, Laurent and Swift. They are all of a similar age and when they get momentum we can really put teams to the sword - it’s just work in progress to get them going through the gears instead of waiting…

A welcome 3 points. Against better sides the game could have been over by half time. Let's hope that the available players quickly gel and build an understanding. Before it's too late.

Has Swift saved Pauno his job? We were dreadful until the free=kick. Then we score and look like a completely different side. Puscas did really well for the second and Dele Bashiru’s third which I thought was going over the bar was sensational. His finish for his first was excellent too. We have scored 13 in 7 and are joint second top scorers yet we cannot keep a clean sheet and yet again concede from a set piece at the back post. Southwood that one drop apart was composed, alert and made an excellent save. It’s his shirt now. Moore adds to the injury list but it sounds like a Dann, Drinkwater, Rino and Rafael should all be back in…

I'd definitely say our medical team (or lack thereof) is saving Pauno's job.

Considering the low attendance and the sub par performance I thought the atmosphere was brilliant tonight, even when we were struggling at times.
