Match Report

Fulham
No goals
This was a game which disproved the theory that there are ‘no easy games at this level’. It is unlikely that Reading pick up three points as comfortably as this again this season. Admittedly their task was made easier when Smith’s appalling lunge at Akpan after eighteen minutes had reduced their opponents to ten men, but by then Reading were already dominating the game, and had taken the lead with a superbly created and taken goal by Murray.

This was very different Reading team from the one which had looked so vulnerable in their last home game. The power and aggression of Mackie, Murray and Cox were more than the Fulham back four could handle. With Obita, Taylor, Gunter and Mackie marauding down the flanks, and Norwood pinging long passes wide with unerring accuracy, Reading looked a class above their recently relegated opponents. Reading deservedly took the lead when Obita went past his man and curled in a superb cross for Murray to convert with a diving header. Fulham had their chances but an excellent stop by Federici and a well timed last ditch tackle (by Hector I think) prevented an undeserved equaliser. Norwood was playing a key role in midfield but spurned a chance to open his account when he ran onto a ball which sat up nicely for him but took the option of jinking his way closer to goal and lost possession. Murray spun and shot wide, and Gunther shaved the post with good low strike, but Reading were unable convert their dominance in to goals. Fulham fans were clearly not happy with their team’s first half performance.

Fulham ‘keeper Kiraly (looking remarkably like like a school boy who had forgotten his kit) made two outstanding save early in the second half. Cox and Taylor both had excellent strikes on goal turned away with a strong hand from the Fulham ‘keeper. The investable second goal came courtesy of Murray’s strength and power in the air when he headed in Obita’s corner from close range. Reading appeared to think two goal was adequate and slackened off sufficiently to allow Fulham a period of possession. Presumably with Tuesday night’s game in mind, Adkins replaced Mackie and Murray with Pogebnyank and Blackman for the final phase of the game. Blackman sealed the win with a third goal five minutes from time rounding Kiraly before steering the ball past the covering defender on the line.

Everyone seemed to agree Magath’s position is looking very shaky after this performance. However for Reading, the new signings have made a big difference. Now everyone seems to want to play and the future looks suddenly much brighter.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Well - that was enjoyable! We played football! Fulham were poor but they were not that bad. They contributed to a lively start by both sides but once Murray scored (with a brave diving header from a great Obita cross) and once they were down to 10 men (red card looked harsh to me) they lost heart and looked like a team devoid of confidence. Having said that, they were denied goals by a superb last ditch challenge by Gunter and again by a great save by Feds diving low to his left. Fulham also enjoyed about 15 minutes of supremacy in the game after we scored our second and then, predictably but frustratingly, eased off.

But today was all about Reading and I was impressed by the way we passed the ball - both long and short - and the fact that we were playing at pace! Fantastic debut by Murray who looks like a real striker and linked up really well with Cox and Mackie (who has more pace than his frame suggests!) considering they have had little time to get to know each others' game. It's difficult not to give MOTM to Murray so I will, but both Gunter and Obita shone as well. In fact there was hardly a weak link in the team today although Akpan (and I am not one of the Akpan haters) didn't seem to be as quick of thought as the other midfielders and slowed the game down when in possession.

Murray will have been disappointed to have been substituted - as he was probably looking forward to a hat-trick against a tiring 10-man side towards the end of the game - but I though NA needed to make those substitutions to disrupt that Fulham period of pressure. Pog headed (or was it deflected?) onto the bar and we had one other simple chance (I couldn't see who it fell to) which was blasted straight at their keeper (who also had a good game) from close-range when it looked easier to score. Edwards provided an injection of energy which we needed and Blackman provided the third goal.

Quotes from the Press

Glenn Murray scored two goals on his debut as Reading comfortably beat 10-man Fulham to pile more pressure on manager Felix Magath. The striker, on loan from Crystal Palace, headed in Jordan Obita's cross before Fulham debutant Matt Smith was sent off for a lunge on Hope Akpan.

Murray doubled the lead when he nodded home Obita's corner from close range. Substitute Nick Blackman sealed the win late on to leave Magath's men with a fifth loss in six league games.

The Cottagers have now slipped to the bottom of the Championship and sections of the travelling support made their feelings clear with calls for the German to be sacked at the end of the match.

Any hopes of Fulham claiming their first league win of the season were rendered almost impossible inside the first 20 minutes at the Madejski Stadium as they found themselves a goal and a man down before having the chance to settle into the game.
