Match Report

Reading
L Wing (90)
Lincoln
R One (5) J Moylan (90)
For the second time in four days Reading demonstrated a vulnerability to concede late goals and it has probably denied an injury-stricken squad a shot at gaining an unlikely promotion through the play offs.

On Thursday two points were dropped away to Huddersfield after conceding a stoppage time equaliser. Today having appeared to have clawed back a point with a magnificent late equaliser from Wing, they fell apart defensively six minutes into stoppage time, allowing Moylan a clear run at Pereira to secure a victory which earned Lincoln (deservedly) automatic promotion to the Championship.

It has been a frustrating season for Royals fans. The possibility of promotion has always hung in the balance and today some of the fundamental weaknesses which prevented it becoming a reality were plain to see. Having enjoyed over 70% of the possession Reading’s only goal attempt on target came from a Lewis Wing free-kick. From what I saw today Lincoln are nothing special but, having taken an early lead from a set piece, did not need to attack or even defend particularly well to maintain their advantage.

Liam Richardson must take some of the responsibility for the lack of energy, movement, creativity, and pace going forward. Too often the option of a forward pass was ignored, individually players seemed need too many touches before releasing the ball for fear of losing possession or demonstrated a reluctance to get a shot away when given a sight of goal.

The lack of creativity and fire power has been cruelly exposed when Jack Marriott suffered along term injury. Having released Smith and Wareham last season the failure to recruit replacements is unforgivable. Ehibhatiomhan deserves credit for working hard and improving his all-round game, but too much has rested on his shoulders. Doyle, one of the more creative members of the squad, has clearly not been fit for recent games, but desperation has forced Richardson to persevere with him. Today he was wandering around holding the back of his thigh but was still encouraged to continue probably exacerbating the problem. I wonder if he will appear again this season.

I am hoping for the last few games, what remains of this threadbare squad can be less cautious and more aggressive going forward. Forget about promotion, and lets play with a bit more energy, a sense of urgency and look like we want the ball instead of pointing to someone else to take responsibility.

Lane is such an odd duck. He seems to be trying to do all the right things, has a good record in the division, and yet his passing accuracy is dreadful, he's got no pace so never gets away from anyone, and is frequently just brushed off the ball. Criticising Lane! tut tut tut You should probably work out how to quote if you're going to try to have a pop.

Oh and ref was shite. Didn’t look a fk for the goal, and maybe those watching on tbe steam can tell me otherwise but their forward should have had a (second) yellow for that challenge on JP at 1-1? FK - Savage goes to hook a ball over his shoulder to clear, and player comes from his blindside to try to head. Savage gets the ball, then maybe a piece of face. It's a very generous FK imo. But if we actually defend it, rather than leave a man free and then palm his shot in the net (hard one to save admittedly), shouldn't be an issue. DK penalty shout. He's body checked after the ball went. It's usually given as a pen imo. A generous…

Shockingly bad. Coppell apparently said "you wouldn't want to watch that every week" after the game. Nothing any of us can say is more damning than that from our greatest ever manager. That's Richardsonball for you.

I find it amusing that people who have been chronically complaining about us being able to keep the ball and just hoofing it forward are now complaining that we kept the ball. Considered review of the game... We came up against by far the best team in the League, who are absolute masters of smash and grab. They are unbeaten since early December, have the lowest average possession in the League, and best defence in the League. And they showed us why. They were incredibly organised, worked exceptionally well and hard as a team, let us have the ball, and moved the ball forward extremely quickly and at pace. No shit we struggled to…
