Match Report

Reading
J Mackie (90)
Bolton
E Gudjohnsen (60)
Reading will go into Saturday's big FA Cup quarter final match at Bradford City on the back of a very late draw at Bolton Wanderers this evening. Reading trailed 0-1 into stoppage time at the end of the match but rescued a very late point when Jamie Mackie made it 1-1 with moments left to play. Mackie's goal seemed to come from nowhere with Reading struggling to create any clear cut opportunities as he fired home from outside the area into the bottom corner of the net. Moments before the goal Bolton might have wrapped up the three points, after looking much the better side in the second half, but Federici's save was crucial.

Reading made two changes from the side that was unsuccessful against Nottingham Forest on Saturday at the Madejski Stradium. Mackie, who was unable to face his own club at the weekend, was back in action up front alongside Pavel Pogrebnyak. Simon Cox found himself on the bench and restricted to playing just the last twenty minutes.

Danny Williams was moved to the bench with Oliver Norwood taking his place in midfield in the starting eleven. The changes looked like they would make little difference until Mackie earned Reading a point that justified his place in the starting eleven. Mackie had also had the most of Reading's limited chances in the first half, with the only other effort of note seeing Alex Pearce head over the Bolton crossbar. Bolton took the lead on the hour when former Reading player Adam Le Fondre turned provider to set up first half substitute Gudjohnsen to score. Mackie's late goal was only Reading's second league goal in six matches.

Reading had looked set to follow up two 0-3 defeats with a 0-1 defeat at Bolton but instead pulled further away from the drop zone, thanks to a Millwall defeat, as they increased the gap to ten points. The Royals had been bright enough in the first half, going in 0-0 at the break. Reading might have had extra hope after the home side were forced to use all three of their substitutes during the first half due to injuries. However, Reading, once again, were poor in the second half.

Meanwhile Bradford City kept a cleansheet at home as they ran out 1-0 winners against Crawley. That result made Reading's late point perhaps even more important as we can head into that game with a bit more hope against a Bradford City side who will be clear favourites to make it to the semi-finals.

Post-Match Fans' Opinion

Absolutely freezing and absolutely abysmal. So much so that I left after 88 minutes. Simply couldn't see it getting any better. Missed our equaliser unfortunately.

A single shot on target in each half (before leaving) and it was simply atrocious. We managed to force them into three substitutions in the first half, and the possibility of wearing them down in the second seemed great. Unfortunately this wasn't to be.

Officials were also shocking, although the match wasn't dirty in my eyes. Mills and Norwood having their usual ranting at the officials. Was quite funny when the referee signalled a Bolton throw and the assistant signalled a Reading throw. Neither conceded so we took it. I think the assistants got equally annoyed at the man in the middles feeble attempts to control the game.

The first half was spent pretty much in our own half, although nothing clinical from either team, six shots with three on target for the home side, compared with our three shots to one on target. Feds kept us in it with three world class saves in the first half, and a few more in the second.

Second half we cam out strong for the first five minutes and thought we were going to change the game, wasn't to be though. Subs at 70 minutes and Blackman made an immediate impact, with Cox running around like a dog chasing a ball.

Both sets of supporters were dismal, although neither really had anything to cheer about - 150 tickets purchased according to the staff on the single gate that was open.

Quotes from the Press

ANYTHING that could go wrong did go wrong for Wanderers, right up until the last kick of the game against Reading. Having battled bravely to overcome the loss of THREE players to injury inside the first half, Eidur Gudjohnsen’s 60th-minute strike looked to have settled the contest. But two minutes into stoppage time Jamie Mackie broke the Whites’ resistance to snatch a thoroughly undeserved equaliser for the Royals, who had scored just once in their previous five games.

Wanderers should have gone into a weekend of inaction sitting comfortably in mid-table but Mackie’s late strike was just another in a long line of painful blows on the night.

The Royals didn’t create too many clear cut chances, Mackie going closest with an angled shot after he had got the better of Ream.

Wanderers recovered their poise and should have been ahead by half time. Heaven knows how Reading kept the ball out of the net when Matt Mills got his head to Feeney’s cross, blocked on the line.

As if to emphasise what luck Wanderers are having with injuries, even one of the half time Zorb competitors ended up going off on a stretcher.
